pre-camhs support pathway

A preventative, relational support service for children experiencing emotional difficulties, offering early help and guidance while awaiting or before referral to CAMHS.

This service aligns with Early Help, THRIVE, and preventative mental health frameworks currently promoted across education and health services.

The aim is to offer timely, relational individual/family support that can:

  • Reduce escalation of difficulties

  • Support emotional regulation and resilience

  • Strengthen adult understanding and response

  • Reduce pressure on families and schools

  • In some cases, prevent the need for CAMHS referral altogether

This work sits alongside – not instead of – NHS services and is designed to complement existing safeguarding and referral pathways. All work is grounded in: Systemic Family Psychotherapy

The support offered is individually collaboratively created, non diagnostic and can Include…

• Individual or family therapeutic sessions

• Observation and reflective work within the school/nursery environment

• Parent consultation and guidance to understand behaviours relationally and as a means of communication

• Staff reflection and emotional formulation

• Support during CAMHS waiting periods

Long CAMHS waiting lists mean many children sit for months — sometimes years — without support.

Early, relational intervention:

  • reduces escalation

  • improves emotional regulation

  • supports families and schools

  • often prevents issues becoming entrenched and the risk of life-long patienthood for children.
